[Imageworld] 3 Phd positions, Computer Science Department, University of Geneva, Switzerland

The Computer Science Department, University of Geneva, Switzerland, has three new openings for PhD
students, financed in part by the Hasler Foundation.

PhD position 1: project POPWiN - Parallel Object Remote Programming  for Heterogeneous Wireless Networks
over IPv6. Theoretical Computer Science and Sensor Nets Laboratory (http://tcs.unige.ch)

This project is in collaboration with the Grid and Cloud Computing group of the HES-SO University of Applied
Sciences of Fribourg, Switzerland. The whole project is dedicated to the development of programming tools for
heterogeneous wireless networks over IPv6.  The PhD candidate to the open position in the TCS group will be
responsible for the design and the implementation of the communication mechanisms in the wireless networks.
The successful candidate should have some knowledge of wireless communications. She/He will work on the
following topics: Energy-balance routing mechanisms; Implementation of Geographic Coordinates systems;
Adaptive and cooperative tracking mechanisms.

The candidate should have a background in Computer Sciences and some interest in applied mathematics,
modelling, programming tiny devices (sensors) and, wireless computer networks.

Contract duration: 1 initial year, up to 3-4 years.
The starting date is January 2012.

PhD positions 2 and 3: Project EyeWalker, Computer Vision and Multimedia Laboratory (http://cvml.unige.ch),
Multimodal Interaction Group (http://cvml.unige.ch/MMI).

The goal of the EyeWalker project (Ultralight portable vision system for mobility aids) is to develop a low-cost,
ultralight computer vision device for elderly users with mobility problems. The EyeWalker would warn users of
potentially risky situations or help locate a few particular objects both indoors and outdoors, in known or
unknown environments, under widely varying illumination conditions. Collaboration between: University of
Geneva, Swiss Center for Electronics and Microtechnology (CSEM, http://www.csem.ch), Haute Ecole de
Suisse Occidentale (HEIG-VD, Yverdon, http://www.heig-vd.ch/).

Profile for Positions 2 and 3: Master's degree in Computer Science or a closely related field. Good knowledge of
signal/image/video processing and pattern recognition. Excellent programming skills, taste and capacity to put
new ideas into working prototypes.  They will work on the following topics: Computer Vision, Machine
Learning, Real-time prototyping. Although the working language is English, Geneva is a French-speaking place
and experiments will be carried out with elderly persons in French.

Contract duration: 1 initial year, up to 3-4 years.
Starting date: as soon as possible.
